The Take Away

Attendees will learn the subtle – and not so subtle – signs of child abuse and neglect, and what school staff can and MUST do, under New Jersey law, the basic steps in reporting, and how to keep a child safe.

Who

Teachers, Child Study Team Members, bus drivers, school directors, principals, therapists and anyone else working with children.

The Workshop

No teacher ever wants to learn that one of his/her students is being abused or neglected, but child abuse happens every day.  Last year, nearly 40,000 referrals for suspected abuse or neglect were filed with the Department of Children and Families (DCF), and more than one in four of those referrals came from schools.  As trusted adults, teachers are on the front line and in a unique position to intervene.  In order to do so, they must know what to look for, and what to do.

Attendees will leave knowing how to identify children who are being abused or neglected, and what to do in order to keep children safe.

The Presenter

Gabriel Spiler, MSW, L.C.S.W., is a licensed clinical social worker and former trainer for Safe Haven Infant Protection Act.  He currently trains Child Abuse workers via Rutger University’s Graduate School of Social Work in partnership with the Department of Children and Families (formerly Division of Youth and Family Services, DYFS), served as the Administrator of the New JErsey State Child Abuse Reporting Hotline, and the Administrator of all after hours investigations.  He was the Liaison between DYFS and the New Jersey Department of Education.  He is the recipient of the Governor’s Team Partnership Award and the New Jersey Child Assault Prevention Award.
