WBA’s extended school year theme related to the Culinary Arts and culminated in our First WBA Food Truck Race. Staff created cross curricular plans to ensure all content areas were covered. Students attending ESY were surveyed during the school year as to what foods they would like to make for their food truck.
The trucks were named for a variety of selected cuisines: Carmen’s Italian Dessert Truck, Cόté Sucré (French Sweet Sides Truck), Crepes R US, Good Luck and Fortune Food Truck, John’s Jolly Pirate Truck, and Limitless Lemons. During ESY students studied the countries in which their chosen foods originated.
Recipes were researched, menus were created, ingredient lists were made, materials and shopping lists were created, and pricing was determined. In art, students worked with staff to design and paint their own trucks. Students also engaged in cooking and creating the various menu items before the event.
On July 27th, the day of the event, each student and staff member was provided with WBA bucks to spend at each truck. The food truck that made the most money was designated the winner and that class enjoyed a pizza party.
