Francisco showed up at Westbridge for his senior year. One year. That was the deal he made with himself, with his mom, and with us: get through senior year strong, and figure out what comes next. He did both.
Student Spotlight: Celebrating Keyon M. - Keyon walked through our doors for the first time in 2017. He was seven. He’s in eleventh grade now, and Westbridge looks different for him having been part of it.
Letter from the Executive Director - Dear Westbridge Families,As we close another school year at Westbridge, I want to share what defines this place. It isn’t the building or the brochure. It’s what happens at 8:39 AM when a student walks through the door, carrying whatever they are carrying, and what we do once they arrive. That is the heart of Westbridge.
Last year, five of the students who left Westbridge Academy did not wear a gown or toss a hat in the air. In fact, they did not even earn a diploma. Rather, they were placed back into classrooms at their sending public school.
Sometimes, when a student is upset, they just need a safe place to stop, take a break, and reflect. The Reflection Room at Westbridge Academy was established this fall to offer an additional therapeutic layer of intervention for students. It offers a calm, supportive therapeutic environment away from the social and instructional pressures of the classroom where students can go to cool off, manage frustrations and take a break.
For many students at Westbridge Academy, executive function skills are the “missing link” to achievement. That is why Westbridge staff began a year of growth and development, creating and implementing Authentic Problem Based Learning Units into their daily classroom work with their students.
From time to time, students at Westbridge Academy may miss school for an extended period of time. We know that learning cannot take time off, so we are ready with comprehensive lesson plans to support students during absences.
Victor Ruiz is the Education Technology Coordinator at Westbridge Academy. He manages and facilitates technology in the building, including each child’s and staff’s computer, online learning programs, and works to help teachers use educational technology in new ways.
Fitness Friday is an innovative new program designed to engage students in building strength, both inside and out. Offered to middle and high school students as part of the physical education curriculum, the program allows teens to plan personal fitness goals, and use the school’s new fitness room to achieve them.
